Thank you for signing up to visit your Representative!

We have put this webpage together to provide you with additional information for your visit with your Representative.

Together, we can ensure that the House passes a bill that provides consumers with real, strong ID theft protections—not phony protections like HR 3997, the so-called "Financial Data Protection Act."

First: Find your Representative

In case you don't know where the closest district office is to you:

  • Go to http://www.house.gov and enter your 9 digit zip code that was provided in the email.
  • Click on your member's website and look for the district office phone number and address. Jot them down and move on to scheduling your meeting.

Second: Schedule your Meeting

To make arranging the visit as easy as possible for you, please:

  • Call the local office and request a meeting with your member or someone from their staff to discuss pending legislation on identity theft. You will be able to schedule a day and time that works best for you.
  • Please try to schedule visits during the week of August 14-18.  Having the visits on the same week will help to maximize our impact.
  • If the Representative is not available, request a meeting with a member of the staff who is knowledgeable on the ID theft legislation. Please do not be discouraged as your message will be conveyed to your lawmaker.

Third: Helpful Background Information

  • Talking Points
  • Background and Explanation on House Bills Consumers would be worse off if HR 3997 becomes law, than if Congress takes no action at all. A better alternative is HR 4127, supported by Consumers Union.

  • Top Tips for a Successful Visit
  • About the States
    • 25 states have passed security freeze legislation: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Wisconsin provide all its residents with the option of placing a security freeze on their credit files, while Hawaii, Kansas, South Dakota, Texas and Washington currently provide this option only to ID theft victims.
    • California, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas have strong notice of data security breach laws.  Many residents throughout the nation have benefited from these stronger notice laws by obtaining notice that their sensitive information has been lost, which can be eliminated if Congress decides to pass a weaker standard.
