Resist the Tower! Fight Media Power!

While it may seem like there are more television channels, radio stations, and Internet choices than ever, if you look closely, you will find that much of the entertainment, news and information you get has a certain sameness.  That's because much of what you see, hear and read today is under the control of a handful of large companies.

Two years ago, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) tried to make things worse. They wanted to rewrite the rules which would have made the media even more consolidated.

Word got out about the FCC’s plan, and the public was outraged.  What happened next was amazing! More than 2.2 million people let the FCC know it by sending in their letters!

Help us reach our goal of 50,000 signatures!

Current: 16089

In the wake of this public mobilization, the courts threw out the FCC's rule changes.

But, the FCC is at it again. This time, let’s make sure that the public is heard loud and clear before it writes new media ownership rules!

Sign this petition to require at least 10 public hearings across the country. Don’t let the FCC regulate your media behind closed doors.

We apologize, but the selected Survey is currently unavailable.

Petition:

Now that your agency will soon start writing new rules on media ownership limits, I want to make sure that my desires for a diverse and strong local media are heard.

Before you go back to the drawing board, I want people like me to have the opportunity to weigh in. I urge you to hold public hearings in at least 10 communities across the country before drafting any rules.

I urge you to ensure that the new rules result in more diversity, competition and local control. Please don't let media giants like Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. or the Gannett Co. control the most important local sources of news -- my local newspaper and TV stations.

Like most Americans, I rely on the media to find out about national and local issues.  I want to feel confident that I can get all the viewpoints I need to make well-reasoned decisions about these issues, and expect the FCC to draft rules that encourage diversity of media voices and ownership.

[your personal comment, should you make one, will be added here]

When the FCC rewrites its ownership rules, it's time to ensure diversity, localism and independence in our media for years to come.
